Spell Work Questions...

How do you feel about the "Law of Correspondences"? I re-read an article about it and feel as if I understand it more now than before. I think that when I first started out (a mere 4 months ago) I thought that it was more to trick your mind. I had read The Inner Temple of Witchcraft and wondered why people didn't just do everything with their minds. I am now understanding that even if you can do it all with your mind, you may have stronger results when you have a physical representation or correspondence with the work you wish to be doing. Yes it fires up your mind a little more and helps with focus, but it also completes a circuit. As above, so below.

Danu, Celtic Mother Goddess

I was researching many correspondences last night for a working I hope to do tonight. One goddess I felt akin with was the Celtic mother goddess, Danu. Have you heard of her? The information I found about her was sparse online, so I would appreciate any extra info you might have about her. As far as I could tell, she is a river goddess, a mother goddess, Queen of the Sidhe (or faery folk), fertility (goes along with the mothering aspect I suppose), abundance and prosperity. I really feel something when I think about her, very familiar.

Another question to put out to all of you reading this, do you write your own chants and spells? I know that spells are said to be more powerful if they are from your own creation. What about chants? I have only done one real spell, a working done with ribbon, so I am not sure what other types of spells are out there. I refuse to study them because I do not want to infiltrate my mind with other spells. It is a little bit of a catch-22 I guess. I have written a pleasant chant and will write a decent spell, but the physical aspect of the spell eludes me. I do not want to go the ribbon route again. This is a spell I will do three times (now, next week and again on the full moon) to ensure strength. If you have any ideas I will appreciate them, even if I do not get them in time, I could use them for next time.

I wish all of you a warm and peaceful night during our waxing moon phase. May all of your magick during this phase be full of power and truth.

personally myself I think that any time and in any way you can put yourself into any of your work, writing, chanting, spells etc is the better as it is a personal thing. The magick does come from within you...

All those things about Danu are true. The only other thing I know about her is that the Danube river in Europe is named for her.

I did a cursory, quickie search for Danu to see if I could find you any more information but nothing immediately turned up, I'm sure it's out there though. But what you have written there about her is correct to my knowledge. She is the Mother and founder of the Tuatha de Dannan - the shining ones, one of the races of Gods of Ireland. The line includes Dagda, Morrigan and Lugh.

Her name also turns up in Hindu mythology.

As far as spellwork goes. I encourage you to not shy away from studying correspondences and different methods of spellwork. It's all knowledge and it's only going to further your growth. Of course don't accept what you read just because it's written, but. There's a whole big wide world of methods and ways out there to explore. ;-)

The conmments others have made here are giving you very good advice and informtion. I too am really getting into correspondences and they certainly help make the spells/rites flow more strongly when they are included in your workings. It sounds like you are taking the right direction - your direction, using your intuition as to what works for you. Keep up the good work.

Iris, you may want to look at Thalia Took's blog entries for this week at Amused Grace -- she is featuring Danu as her Goddess of the Week. Her blog is at http//amusedgrace.blogspot.com

I have no information to offer about Danu, but I'm sure there is plenty out there. Just a matter of finding it, I guess.

Hope all is well!
